Creativity in ‘Style and Ideas’

Arnold Schoenberg wrote different articles called ‘Style and Ideas’. The articles explained how people can lose their ideas in the name of style, but not lose styles in the name of ideas. The author also tells that an individual can get to a point where he or she can create, name, and own his or her specific style without difficulties. The articles also point out on how people should integrate what is inside them (ideas and creativity) with what is outside them (the external personal style in various activities we do).

There are two elements which represent a very important part of creative process. The title of the book reads “Style and Idea”. The two words may have different interpretations, and they can also be a source of entertaining topic here. Nevertheless, whatever both of these words mean, they are deeply rooted in the mechanics of creativity. Simply, the style may inspire the idea and at the same time, the idea may inspire the style. That is; both elements are complementary of a perfect genesis. However, the most controllable and long lasting element in the creative mind is the ‘style’, but it must be presented in an organized manner in order to create something important or exciting.

I view creativity in the sense that ‘an idea cannot live without style’. Therefore, the ideas must be developed from its style. This indicates that the style act as a framework that allows the idea to unfold as it is tied together. Thus, the elements of the style and idea should be balanced in a person who is creating the work. A creator who concentrates much of the style may tend to assume the pure genesis of the idea. On the other hand, a person who is focused on the idea alone might find himself without the proper tools needed to present it to life. Therefore, creativity is presented is presented by the author in the sense that both idea and style are major components of the creator. Creativity is the ideas inside the creator, and who turn them to a style. Hence, there is no end to the level of creativity from an artist when designing the style of his or her inspiration.

Andy Green defines creativity as what individuals who are identified as ‘creative’ do. However, he adds that creativity is influenced by place, values, and cultural context.  I think creativity, as depicted from the in the articles by Arnold Schoenberg, it is the skill used in artwork to create an “aesthetic” item or something of “beauty”. Therefore, any art requires some thought and certain creativity. Therefore, the creator must be exist in all aspects and be unique and one who expresses a deep level of creativity. For example, a composer of music or film must maintain the ideas and styles in order to come up with certain creativity. Uniqueness is one of the features that can be used to judge the goodness of creativity. For example, a good at work will always explore new subjects in a manner that has not been expressed before.

Creativity requires some added value to make it better. In the case of painting work, if a person wants to understand whether one art is greater over the other one, you might find that a certain painting appears better made or more impressive than the other one.

In terms of technique, one might look at the consistent of the individual. Therefore, I think the main principles or criteria that can be used to measure the greatness of an art is through analyzing the kind of skills or technique possessed by an individual. For example, a good at work will always explore new subjects in a manner that has not been expressed before. Even though it does not mean that all the artworks are perfect or good, the problem is who should decide or define a good or bad creativity.

However, it may be sometimes difficult to judge the level of skill one might have, but the more exposure to a creative work, the more one gain experience. Therefore, the growth of the artworks is highly determined by people’s creativity and techniques, the ideas and habits they are creating, and more so, the adaptability and the precision they have attained over the years.

Even though it does not mean that all the artworks are perfect or good, the problem is who should decide or define a good or bad art. I think the aspect of measuring the level of creativity should be based on the creator’s experience. On the other hand, the level of creativity should be base on how visually, aurally or comfort the artwork is. Finally, the creativity should be an instrument that speaks about itself before being judged on aesthetic value.
